Currents in the Strait of Gibraltar

Animation of the vertical profile of horizontal currents measured by an RDI 75 kHz Workhorse Long Ranger ADCP in the Strait of Gibraltar. The high durability and time reliability of the instrument is crucial for the mooring to survive in such harsh conditions, with currents exceeding 2.5 m/s and corrosion stalking in the deep. The baroclinic structure of the water column driven by tides, with Mediterranean (lower) and Atlantic (upper) waters flowing in opposite direction is outstandingly reproduced.

Tell us more about the survey and the data proccessing - Only data images and videos: The ADCP is embedded in a subsurface buoy moored in the Espartel Sill, at the western exit of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean water undergoes the last acceleration before to spread through the Atlantic Ocean. The instrument is part of an historical station aid at monitoring the Mediterranean outflow, functioning since 2004 to present day.
